2021 will go down as a very special vintage. The season will be marked with a nod to the vintages of old in the Yarra Valley where cooler conditions allowed for a long ripening window, allowing for elegance and intense flavour development.
We likened the vintage to 2020 and 2017 so we sat back and waited a little in respects to picking to allow for full flavour maturity. In the winery it was a vintage to soak up and enjoy. The cooler conditions and low yields combined to allow us to feather the fermentations into their most idyllic spot prior to winter. Overall vintage was a pleasure.

This vineyard is located at the north-western end of the Mount Dandenong range at an altitude of 185 – 200m asl. The aspect of the block is south east, meaning the vineyard has less direct sun exposure in the hot summer afternoon. The Soils are rhyodacite rock (Devonian era volcanic eruptions over 400 million years ago), over a top soil of nutrient poor light grey loam, which is derived from the erosion of the rhyodacite rock.

Once being handpicked on 12th March the grapes were brought back to the winery and split in two different parcels. One parcel was destemmed and saw 22 days on skins to maximise colour, texture and tannin extraction. Whereas the other component was treated as whole bunches, destemmed after 1 week and given a further 1 week on skins to develop further. Both batches were run to old French oak and new Austrian oak (Stockinger). After being raised in oak for 9 months, the wine was blended and bottled in January 2022 without fining or filtration.
The wine has been further aged in bottle for 18 months prior to release.

There are aromas of red roses, dark cherry and blackberry. Oak tones show though as white pepper spice, clove and sandalwood. There are layers of meatiness and flintiness, making a compelling argument to give the wine some time in the glass with oxygen.
On the palate are red fruit notes of dark cherry, raspberry jam and hints of freshly picked strawberry. Oak spices come to the fore with earthy notes and sandalwood; leading into a blood orange, Campari-esc finish. The texture washes over the palate like suede with tannins that melt into the mouth.

A savoury style of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. This wine will continue to improve over the next 10 years or more from vintage.
